Listing Your Website in Directories
Apart from Search Engines, you will also need to submit your
website to the major directories. Directories list websites in
alphabetical order in appropriate categories, hence it helps if your
website name starts with an A, B or C rather than X, Y or Z.
However, this should not be your criteria when naming your website,
but it is definitely a point to keep in mind.
Getting listed in directories is the best way to build 'Link
Popularity'. Search engines all over the web will favor your website
if you have inbound links coming from major directories.
Submitting to directories can be paid or free. Unlike search
engines, directories do not crawl your websites for data. They will
list only the descriptions that you type in when submitting to them.
So, it is advisable to prepare keywords and descriptions beforehand.
It is also essential that you submit your website in the correct
category.
List of Major Directories
Without doubt, Yahoo is the most important directory to get
listed in. But getting listed here may cause a small fortune. A
Yahoo directory listing costs $299 and this amount is not refundable
if your submission gets rejected for some reason.
This is the best option as submissions are free. ODP has a large
number of volunteers who maintain this large directory and help keep
it free. Many other major directories (which do not accept direct
submissions) use the listings from ODP. So, if you get listed there,
chances are that you will also get listed into many more directories
on the internet including the Google Directory.
To get listed in the Dmoz directory, browse to the category most
suited for your website and then click on 'Add Your URL' link at the
top right of the page to submit your website details.
The Jayde Online Directory is an excellent place to list your
website. They require you to subscribe to their email newsletter
which is a good one for webmasters.
LookSmart has changed the submission feature to a paid one now.
If you want to get listed in LookSmart without shelling any $$, try
getting listed in their free, volunteered directory - Zeal (see
below for details).
Zeal is a volunteer-rated index of non-commercial sites, similar
to Open Directory. It is now owned by LookSmart. Submitting to Zeal
can get you into the main LookSmart index, if it's a non-commercial
site. But getting listed is a tiresome process. You need to pass an
online test about their user guidelines and after you pass it, your
website is personally reviewed by a volunteer. Don't be surprised if
you have to take many tests and re-submit with a whole lot of
changes a number of times, before you finally get accepted.
